Going through the video games that I've played over the years, I realized a few things. First, most of the main characters are males, with females usually the damsel in distress (ex. Mario and Princess Peach). Second, most of the characters are white. It is hard to find any ethnic characters within the library of videogames of the world. When I looked online, the best site I could find to illustrate this point is here:

There are a few more but it is difficult to find any that have any exposure beyond being the lead characters sidekick. Just thought I point this out.

I actually talked a little about this a while ago. It is ironic how most characters in video games are usually male and white. This definetly didnt happen by accident. There is a reason for this.
ReplyDeleteprobably some weird code or something because it sells
ReplyDeleteVery true. Even when the main characther is a woman (Tomb Raider, Wet) she is always very sexualized. She always has big boobs and skimpy clothes. This is because 99.9% of video game programmers are males. I have been playing video games for years and white males are usually the character you play as. If there is a black perosn in the game they are usually either a sidekick or an enemy. What do you think this really says?
ReplyDeleteyeah you are right I had a hard time thinking of any minority characters.
ReplyDeletemario is italian (italian american? i think just italian), but even then he's so stereotypical. he's a low wage earning, overalls wearing, mustachioed, funny talking (momma mia!), short little dude. not exactly a sex symbol.
ReplyDeleteI don't play video games very often but now that you mention it that is so true. I think males even outnumber the female. For instance when you think of mario. There are only one or two female characters compared to all the male characters.
